DERMAL FILLERS

WHAT ARE INJECTABLE FILLERS?

As we age, we lose volume in the soft tissue of our face. Fillers are designed to smooth wrinkles, sculpt and shape facial contours. The most common areas for treatment are the lips and marionettes, the naso-labial folds, tear troughs and the cheeks. The safest fillers are made of hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance that is found throughout our body. HA binds water, thereby restoring firmness and volume. Fillers can and provide a natural appearance lasting up to one year and utilized for enhancements of eyes, lips, cheek bone, scars, and much more.

IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL and WHEN CAN I RESUME DAILY ACTIVITY/WORK?

Dr. Scemla uses fine needles for her injections to create minimal discomfort.  Ice and a topical analgesic is applied to numb the regions injected. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and results are visible immediately. You may return to your regular activities and work immediately after your procedure.

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?

Some patients may experience temporary redness or swelling at the injection site. Dr. Scemla advises her patients to use Arnica before and after the procedure to diminish bruising.  It is also encouraged to discontinue the use of NSAIDS, omega-3, and vitamin, if possible, three days before treatment.  Injectable fillers are contra-indicated in patients allergic to lidocaine or hyaluronic acid.

  • We recommend Arnica Montana pills or gel to prevent bruising these can be purchased in our office or at any health food store or bromelain pills/ pineapple.

  • Note that any bumps or marks from the extremely small needle sticks will go away within a few days . If you do develop a bruise it will resolve like any other bruise. There is occasionally some mild pain, swelling, itching, or redness at the site of injection similar to most other injections. Redness may last for 1-2 days, rarely longer.
