Facial paralysis results from injury to the facial nerve (CN7) caused by strokes, trauma, varicella zoster (Ramsay Hunt Syndrome), Herpes Simplex facial paresis, Lyme disease, Diabetes, Autoimmune conditions and more. This complex nerve is responsible for facial expressions and motor function including speech, mastication, drinking, and eating. It also aids with tear production, taste and hearing. Therefore, injury to this nerve results in dreaded complications. Dr. Scemla specializes in managing these sequelae and treating conditions including facial asymmetrygustatory lacrimation, hemifacial spasms, synkinesis, sensory pain, contractions, TMJ dysfunction, and headaches.
